The Story Behind the Rug : Qashgai Kilim (Flatweave)

The Story Behind the Rug : Qashgai Kilim (Flatweave)

Ever wonder about the rugs showcased at Gregorian? This staff favorite is a one of a kind flatweave rug, hand-woven in Iran. It is 60 years old, but don’t let it’s age fool you. The colors in the vegetable dye wool are still deep and vibrant.  The open field, which is less common in persian rugs, is filled with a beautiful blue indigo abrash. The abrash is described as the change in intensity of the blue color, that is caused by different dyes and time. The antique red used to frame the rug compliments the blue and brightens up the overall look. It’s hard not to be surprised when you learn that this rug was crafted by semi nomadic people that were not professional weavers. It is likely that it was woven during the spare time of a mother and daughter. This transitional piece would go beautifully in a modern rustic home and would add a splash of color to any floor. The classic pattern is not overwhelming and would add soul to a contemporary design. This Kilim is a wonderful example of Persian folk art, which is being reintroduced in modern styling. To view this rug, visit The Mill at Newton Lower Falls at 2284 Washington Street Newton Lower Falls, Ma 02462.   Share this:Click to email this to a friend (Opens in new window)Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Google+ (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pinterest (Opens in new...

When Old is New…Heirloom Rugs for Tomorrow

When Old is New…Heirloom Rugs for Tomorrow

Parts of The Mill at Newton Lower Falls are over two hundred years old. You can see those rooms when you visit Gregorian Oriental Rugs. You can also see some of their one of a kind Persian Bidjar carpets. These rugs are being woven in the same manner as they were in Bidjar and the surrounding villages two centuries ago. A small group of weavers and loom owners got together and made a decision to make Persian village rugs the old way. They got their best weavers and artisans to discover how these rugs had been made. The first step was redrawing the old rug designs. Two of these are Helvai and Garrus. Then they procured sheep so that they could access the hardy local wool of northwestern Iran to hand spin for weaving the rugs. They started up a dye works that used only natural dyes, for coloring the wool. The project took  over two years to bring these rugs to market. They can be seen at Gregorian Rugs at The Mill at Newton Lower Falls. Each one is unique, with the  luminous colors only natural dyes can provide. These rugs are beautiful and the will be heirlooms for generations to come.
